iDesign is is a type of laser eye surgery that focuses that offers incredible precision and amazing results. At LaserCare Eye Center, we offer iDesign in Dallas and Fort Worth.
Before iDesign, surgeons would just use the patient’s prescription to determine the areas of the eye on which to perform corrective surgery. Unfortunately, eye surgery simply isn’t a case of “one size fits all” and this approach proved incapable of accommodating the microscopic imperfections unique to each eye. The results, although impressive for the time, definitely showed this critical flaw. Now, however, the game has changed. LASIK with iDesign utilizes advanced proprietary technology to map every last tiny detail of your eyes. iDesign ensures your surgery will be perfectly tailored to you. No guess-work. No risk-taking.
LASIK stands for “laser-assisted in-situ keratomileuses,” however it’s better known as simply “laser eye surgery.” In short- it is a surgical procedure that reshapes the cornea of the eyes to treat astigmatism, myopia, and hyperopia. The surgeon uses a microkeratome (a precision oscillating blade) or a femtosecond laser to cut a “flap” into the cornea. Next, a different sized laser called an “excimer laser” is used to remove tissue in a precise manner. This stage is called “remodeling” and is done with the assistance of an advanced eye-tracking system that measures and remeasures the eye’s position up to 4000 times a second to ensure the laser stays on target- no matter where or how much you move your eyes. Finally, once the tissue is appropriately reshaped, the flap is put back in place. After a thorough examination, the eye is then left to heal.
In simple terms, the iDesign is a proprietary technology that can preoperationally scan and build a 3D model or “map” of the patient’s eye. With over 12,000 data points captured during use, the machine is able to detect even the minutest of imperfections on the cornea, enabling doctors to tailor surgery to the unique needs of every patient. In fact, due to the technology’s attention to detail, the iDesign system is twenty-five times more accurate than traditional methods.
Wavefront aberrometry is the secret to this custom mapping process. A highly specialized camera aptly named an aberrometer- is employed to scan the eye for a full visual range of aberrations. While prescription-based methods only corrected for lower-order aberrations, iDesign is capable of scanning aberrations of both lower and higher-order. Consequently- not only does the resulting surgery treat major visual faults, such as astigmatism, myopia, and hyperopia, but also distracting visual imperfections like halos, glares, and poor vision in nighttime environments. The device additionally owes its accuracy to the high-definition Hartmann-Shack Wavefront Sensor which delivers five times the resolution compared to traditional methods. Once the “black box” has completed its assessment, it then communicates with the LASIK system to specify precisely where, and to what dimensions, the reshaping procedure is required to take place. During this step, the “eye-map” is integrated into the STAR S4 IR Excimer Laser System, programming it precisely according to the unique layout of the patient’s eye. In the past, this step was in the human hands of the surgeon. Now it can be completely automated. That’s not to say that the operator is uninvolved in the process- in fact, the iDesign provides the operation team with summary metrics, topographic maps, and views every step of the way. While we’re on the subject of the interface, it is worth noting that the iDesign streamlines the entire diagnostic process, allowing data overlays and “one-click acquisition five-in-one measurements.” It even has network printing capabilities. All this serves to ease the workload of the medical practitioner, leading to an overall increase in operative efficiency. This means your surgery is done quicker and better.
The statistics speak for themselves. According to clinical trials, three months after the operation 90% of patients achieved 20/20 vision, while 92% achieved 20/25 vision and an astounding 99% attained 20/40 vision. Still not convinced? These trials also found that 96.7% of patients were within 0.5D of zero prescription, and 100% were within 1.0D. The client experience reflects these numbers too, with surveys reporting a 97% patient satisfaction rate. Furthermore, 99% of patients said they experienced little to no difficulty with the clarity of their vision, nor did they feel limited during outdoor activities. To top it all off, 93% of clients also noted that they experienced minimal or no trouble with night-time driving.
